A wet yard is a location to report, not a pipe diagnosis
Give the visible wet area, whether it is growing and whether water flow indoors has changed. Note recent utility or private work and whether the problem is continuous or only appears during normal equipment use.
Do not excavate or open utility equipment to decide what to call it. An investigation may need to distinguish a private supply line, public-system concern or another source of water before a repair is priced.
The Wichita meter-side rule is a starting point
The City's FAQ says maintenance and repair on the property-owner side of the water meter are generally the owner's responsibility. Ask which section the utility or provider has actually identified. Do not infer the fault's location simply from where water reaches the surface.
Wichita's official reporting page lists 316-262-6000 for water leaks and public sewer-system leaks. That City reporting number is separate from our private plumbing inquiry line. Retain any findings or report reference for the provider.
Define what a locating visit will deliver
Ask whether the visit is an initial assessment, leak locating or a repair appointment. What result will you receive, and what can remain uncertain until access is made? Ask how underground utility coordination will be handled before intrusive work.
If the complaint is only weak flow at one tap, explain that pattern first. The pressure guide helps you distinguish a single outlet from a change across the property.
Questions before agreeing to a trench or bore
- Which line and endpoints are included?
- What finding supports repair at that location?
- Why is a longer replacement recommended if proposed?
- Who arranges locating, access and required approvals?
- What inspection must occur before the work is covered?
- Are soil handling, disposal, lawn and paving restoration included?
- How will the completed work be checked?
Compare a defined result, not an excavation allowance alone
A pipe price can leave out reaching it or restoring the surface afterward. Ask each proposer to list those items and any work carried by another contractor. Resolve an allowance or exclusion before accepting the total.
Keep the original observation, the utility findings and the final repair description together. For an active indoor pipe break, use the burst-pipe checklist; for other requests, return to the Wichita overview.
Does the water-meter boundary locate a sewer obstruction?
No. A water-supply responsibility statement does not identify the cause or location of a wastewater backup. Describe the affected system and request its own findings.
Can I compare repair and replacement at the first visit?
Ask which parts have been assessed and what evidence supports each extent of work. A useful comparison states what remains in place, what changes and which access and restoration items are included.
