PLUMBING HELP, WHEN IT MATTERS

Emergency plumbing help

Water escaping, sewage backing up or a burst pipe? Get clear first steps, then call to discuss the problem and service availability.

01

Quick answer

  1. For gas, smoke or electrical danger, move to safety and contact the appropriate emergency service or utility first.
  2. For an active water leak, use a known shutoff only if it is safe to reach.
  3. Call to describe the problem and confirm availability, timing and charges.
02

Start with the immediate risk

A plumbing problem becomes urgent when water or sewage is escaping, damage is spreading, or essential facilities cannot be used safely. A slow isolated drip is different from a burst supply pipe or wastewater rising through a floor drain. Describe what is happening now, whether it is getting worse and which rooms are affected. The symptom helps set the priority; it does not establish the cause.

03

Match the symptom to the next step

Compare the details for each symptom below.

What you seeWhat it can meanWhat to do first
Water spraying or rapidly poolingAn active supply leak or failed connectionKeep clear of electrical hazards. Use a known, accessible water shutoff only if it is safe to reach.
Sewage rising in more than one fixtureA shared drainage problemStop using affected plumbing and keep people and pets away from contaminated water.
Water near a heaterA connection, discharge, condensation or tank problemKeep clear of hot water and electrical parts; arrange an assessment.
One fixture draining slowlyA local restriction may be involvedStop adding water if the fixture is close to overflowing; report whether other drains are affected.

When a plumbing call is not the first call

For suspected gas, smoke, an electrical hazard, a bulging water-damaged ceiling or immediate danger, move to a safe place and contact the appropriate emergency service or utility. Do not enter standing water to reach an electrical panel or appliance. Do not open gas controls, electrical covers or pressurized components to diagnose the problem.

05

Information that changes an urgent estimate

  1. State the city, property type and affected area.
  2. Say whether water is still flowing and whether a safe shutoff has stopped it.
  3. Describe one affected fixture versus several, and clean water versus sewage.
  4. Mention restricted access, tenant or building-manager approval and any previous repair.
  5. Confirm the provider, arrival window, assessment charge and after-hours pricing before accepting a visit.
Does an emergency inquiry guarantee immediate attendance?

No. Calls are accepted 24/7, but attendance depends on a provider accepting the particular job and location. Ask for the actual arrival window. Never wait for a plumbing appointment when emergency services or a utility are needed for immediate danger.

07

A burst pipe: what the first call needs to establish

Say whether water is still flowing, where it is appearing and whether a safely accessible shutoff has stopped it. Those details are more useful than guessing the pipe material or cause. If you cannot reach the shutoff without entering water or passing electrical equipment, keep away.

Ask whether the proposed visit is for diagnosis, a temporary isolation or a permanent repair. Access through a wall or ceiling, drying and replacing finishes may be separate work. Before anyone opens a surface, agree who will make it safe and who will restore it.

08

Sewage backup or a single overflowing fixture?

Tell the call handler if more than one fixture is affected. A toilet overflowing on its own and wastewater rising through a shower while another fixture is used can point the assessment in different directions. Stop using affected plumbing; repeated flushing can add to the overflow. Keep people and pets away from contaminated water.

Ask whether the visit includes locating the blockage, clearing it and checking flow afterward. If the blockage has returned after earlier work, give the dates and any inspection report. The drain and sewer guide explains the difference between clearing a line and investigating why it keeps blocking.

For water rising in the toilet bowl, the overflowing-toilet guide explains what the supply valve can stop and which details suggest the assessment should include other drains.

What should I confirm before accepting an urgent visit?

Confirm the business attending, the address they will cover, the arrival window and any assessment or after-hours charge. Ask what happens if the problem cannot be repaired during that visit. A phone conversation is not an appointment until the provider confirms it.
