PLUMBING HELP, WHEN IT MATTERS

Drain and sewer problems

One blocked sink or several backed-up drains? Learn what clearing, cleaning and camera inspection can do before arranging the work.

01

Quick answer

  1. One slow drain and several backed-up fixtures need different assessments.
  2. Stop using affected plumbing if sewage is backing up.
  3. Tell the call handler which fixtures are affected and when it began.
02

One slow drain or several affected fixtures?

A single slow sink or tub may have a restriction near that fixture or in its branch line. When several fixtures back up together, or a lower drain reacts when another fixture is used, the problem may be farther along a shared drain. This pattern helps an inspection start in the right place; it does not prove roots, a collapsed pipe or a municipal fault. Stop using plumbing that is overflowing rather than repeatedly testing it with more water.

For a property in Topeka, Kansas, the Topeka sewer-blockage guide explains the city-main and private-lateral distinction and lists the city contact separately from our inquiry line. Use the guidance for the utility that serves your address.

What each drain service is intended to do

Compare the details for each symptom below.

ServicePurposeImportant limit
Snaking or mechanical cleaningWork through an obstruction and restore a path for flowA cleared opening may not remove all buildup or repair damaged pipe.
Hydro jettingUse controlled water pressure to clean pipe walls and depositsSuitability depends on pipe condition, access and the obstruction; it is not appropriate for every pipe.
Camera inspectionRecord the visible internal condition of an accessible lineStanding water, debris or access limits can obscure the view. A camera does not itself clear or repair a drain.
Pipe repair or replacementAddress a confirmed defect or failed sectionThe scope needs evidence of the defect and an access/restoration plan.
04

Backups and drain chemicals

Keep people and pets away from sewage or contaminated water. If you have used a drain chemical, tell the technician the product and approximate time; do not mix cleaners or add a second product. A persistent strong odor, dizziness or another immediate safety concern warrants leaving the area and seeking appropriate emergency advice. See urgent plumbing guidance.

Will a drain camera always identify the cause?

No. It can show visible conditions where it can reach, but water, deposits, inaccessible sections and interpretation limits matter. Ask what was seen, what remains uncertain and whether further cleaning or a different investigation is required before approving a larger repair.

06

The drain cleared last week. Why is it blocked again?

A short-lived improvement does not identify the cause. An opening through a blockage may restore flow while leaving material behind; a damaged section can also need work beyond clearing. Ask what the previous visit found and whether there is a recording or written description.

Before paying for the same service again, describe how long the improvement lasted, which fixtures are affected and whether the problem returns during heavy use or wet weather. Ask the provider what they will do differently this time and what result would justify further investigation.

Use the recurring-clog follow-up checklist to gather the earlier work record and compare what the next visit will investigate.

07

Choosing between snaking, jetting and a camera inspection

These are different jobs. Mechanical clearing opens a path through an obstruction. Jetting may remove deposits from suitable pipework. A camera records visible conditions where it can travel. It does not clean or repair the pipe.

Ask why the proposed method fits your line and what could prevent it working. If a camera view is obscured, the report should explain that limit. For proposed excavation or replacement, request the location of the finding, the supporting images and the work needed to restore the disturbed area.

When comparing proposals, check that both include the same access point, inspection or recording, and restoration work. The plumbing estimate comparison checklist covers the scope, exclusions and approval of additional work.

Does the quoted drain-cleaning price include an inspection?

Not necessarily. Ask whether the quote covers one fixture or the shared line, which access point will be used, whether a camera recording is included and what happens if flow cannot be restored. Get any extra work approved before it starts.
